Dr Habtemariam is a Principal Lecturer at the University of Greenwich’s Department of Pharmaceutical, Chemical and Environmental Sciences in the UK.  He is also a Programme Leader at the University of Greenwich’s School of Science. Dr Habtemariam is a leading expert on drug discovery researches from natural sources. By using ethno-botanical information and bioassay-guided isolation studies, Dr Habtemariam's research has identified several classes of bioactive compounds.


The holder of a PhD from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Strathclyde has published over 130 peer reviewed papers. His previous positions include being a Research Fellow at the Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, a postdoctoral fellow at the Strathclyde Institute for Drug Research and Lecturer at the University of Strathclyde.
Through international collaboration with colleagues in Africa, Asia and Europe, the scientist basis of numerous medicinal plants have been established. Specifically, novel potential therapeutic agents in the following areas haven uncovered:

• Antibacterial agents including antiviral natural products targeting Herpes.
• Novel anticancer natural products with unique structural features.
• The chemistry and pharmacology of novel natural anti-inflammatory compounds.
• Significant contribution in the search of promising antidiabetic and anti-obesity compounds from natural sources.
• Identification of medicinal foods and medicinal plants with promising neuroprotective effects.
• Established the role of natural antioxidant compounds in health and disease.

He is also an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, Royal Society of Chemistry and the African Scientific Institute
