Prof. Hamza earned his B.Sc. in Science (Physics and Chemistry) from Ain Shams University, Egypt, in 1962. He specialized in Physic and obtained M.Sc. in 1967 and Ph.D. in 1972 from the same University.

Prof Hamza was hired at the University of Mansoura, he was a Professor of Physics at the Faculty of Science, University of Mansoura since 1981, Vice Dean (1986 - 1992), first Vice President for Community and Environmental Development (1992 – 1994), President of the University of Mansoura (1994 – 2001), Vice President (2005 – 2008) then President of the British University in Egypt (2008-2013).

Currently, he is a Professor Emeritus in Mansoura University. His research interests are in optical properties of fibers and interferometry. He established Interferometry and Fibre Optics laboratory in the Faculty of Science, Mansoura University.

He is a member of several scientific institutions, includingthe National Committee of Pure and Applied physics, the board of the Academy of Science and Technology (ASRT); elected the chair of Council of Basic Science Researches), the Board of National Institute of Standards NIS, and L’InstituteD’Egypt. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, C.Phys.F.InstP (London), Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society, FRMS (Oxford). Prof. Hamza received several recognitions, including the Egyptian National Award in Physics in 1987, the State Prize of Merit in Basic Sciences in 1997 and Nile Prize in Advanced Technological Sciences in (2005). He was granted Doctor honoris causa (Dr.h.c) from the Technical University of Liberec, Czeck Republic in June 2000. 

He co-authored 159 publications including the book "Interferometry of Fibrous Materials" Published by Adam Hilger IOP Publishing Ltd., with over 1500 citations.
