Prof. Hassanali obtained his PhD in 1969 from the University of Nottingham in UK and held positions of Lecturer at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania (1969 – 1972), Consultant for International Development Research Centre of Canada on Striga and Orobanche germination stimulants at the University of Sussex in UK (1975 – 1976).

He has served at ICIPE as Senior, Principal Research Scientist and Head of Chemistry and Biochemistry Research Unit (1983 – 1992) and became Professor in 1985 before his appointment as Deputy Director General of research (1995 – 1997). He recently holds the position of Professor of Chemistry in 2008 at Kenyatta University in Nairobi.

His research interests are in desert locust, malaria vectors, tsetse flies, ticks, parasitic weeds, natural products, exploring multi-layered meaning of different messages of the Holy Qur’an, classical supplications, sufi’ philosophy and poetry, philosophy, science and religion, socio-economics of development and under-development. He has collaborations with professional Societies and Scientific Institutions. He has 216 publications and 15 patents.
