Prof. Kokwaro obtained his D.Phil. in 1987 from the University of Wales and subsequently (1993) did post doctoral studies at the University of Liverpool in UK.

He went through the normal academic ranks from Lecturer in 1984 to Full Professor in 1999. He is a researcher of pharmacology and clinical pharmacology, Professor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of UK, Professor of Pharmaceutics at the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Nairobi, the Founding Fellow of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences and the Founding Chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Practice at the University of Nairobi.

His research interests are in health of African children with severe diseases in clinical pharmacology of anticonvulsants, severe acidosis as complication, population pharmacokinetics of aminigliycosides, biochemical pharmacology of novel resistance, resistance-reversal antimalarial drugs, and the use of proteomic techniques to identify markers of severe disease.

He was the first Executive Director of the AAS, Director of the Welcome trust Research Laboratories in Nairobi, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer of the African Centre for Clinical Trials, Chairman of the International Academic Board of the Tropical Institute of Community Health and Development in Africa (Kenya). He is author of 55 publications, holder of one patent (2005) and has collaborations with professional societies.
