Prof Mohamed has successfully supervised five Master’s and twenty PhD students. In addition to editing nine books, proceedings and journal special issues, he has  authored/co-authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles. He also also acted as reviewer for more than 90 international journals and sits on the editorial boards of nine journals and has been an invited speaker in a number of international conferences worldwide.


Prof Mohamed has also organised a large number of conferences and symposiums and is also coordinator for the World Mathematical Year 2000 for South Africa. Since re-admission, he served two terms in the International Commission on Development and Exchange (CDE) of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) beginning in 1999.

In 1997 he received the Vice-Chancellor’s Research Award for Research Excellence from the University of Witswatersrand, and was awarded with a fellowship from the Royal Society of South Africa 2010 as well as membership of the Academy of Science of South Africa in 2011. He is recognized was an NRF A-rated researcher in 2013. In 2014 he was recipient of the Transformation of the Science Cohort Award by the NRF of South Africa. Prof Mohamed is an honorary member of the South African Mathematical Society. He also belonged to the South African National Committee for the International Mathematical Union (IMU) 1997; was Director of the Centre for Differential Equations, Continuum Mechanics and Applications 1998-2014.
