Prof. Okafor obtained his B.Sc. in 1960 from the University of London and PhD in 1964 from the University of  Cambridge.  In 1965, he started as a lecturer at the Univerity of Nigeria – Nsukka (UNN) rose through the ranks and became full professor in 1985.

His research interests are in microbiology and development of Universities in Nigeria. He has served as Head of Department of Microbiology and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences of UNN. He has established, Chaired and coordinated the Brewing Studies at the University of Nigeria. He has been Chairman of the Senate research Grant Committee, Chairman of the Department of Microbiology for Post-graduate Committee at UNN.

He was a member of the steering Committee of Biological Control Group of the World Health Organization in Geneva, member Executive Board of the International Organization for Bioengineering and Biotechnology (Africa Representative), member of the Council of Scientific Advisors of the International Centre for genetic Engineering and Biotechnology of Italy. He has been Provost for Administration at Anambra State University of Technology, President of the Nigerian Society for Microbiology and President and Founder of the Foundation for African Development through International Biotechnology.

He is member of the British Society for the Philosophy of Science and several other professional societies. He has several national, regional and international awards and recognitions and106 publications.
