Bio

Prof. Fred Otieno currently the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Partnerships at the Durban University of Technology, South Africa is a “C” rated Researcher with the National Research Foundation (NRF) South Africa.

He is a Professional registered Engineer (Pr Eng), a Fellow of the South Africa Institution of Civil Engineers (FSAICE), a Senior Fellow of the Water Institute of Southern Africa (WISA) in South Africa and was the WISA President in 2007/2008. He has over 30 years in consulting, lecturing and research activities in his areas of specialization (water, environmental, general civil engineering, project management and general management).

He has successfully supervised over 30 masters and 8 doctoral students and continues to do so. He has been an active researcher in a number of disciplines and more recently focusing on water resources management, water and waste water treatment, solid waste management and general environmental management. He has published over 60 accredited Journal papers and over 120 peer reviewed international conference papers.

He previously worked as a consulting engineer and has over the years consulted for a number of NGO’s, Government Departments, national and international organizations and the United Nations Specialized Agencies in his areas of expertise. He has previously held a number of Non-Executive Director positions, among these being the Vice Chairperson of the Water Research Commission, Non-Executive Director and acting Chairperson of Pikitup in Johannesburg; Chairperson of Softstart BTI Technology incubator and the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL).

He currently sits on the Boards of and Randwater and Invotech Incubator, where he is the Chairperson of the Board. He is also involved in the UNESCO’s African National Scientific and Technological Institutions (ANSTI) Board as the Vice Chairperson of its Board as well as being a Council Member of the South African Institution of Civil Engineers.
