Through the Africa STI Priority Setting Project, the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) is working with key stakeholders to identify and validate key research priorities for the continent. Once identified, the AAS will disseminate and advocate for such priorities with an aim to inform investment decisions by African governments and global funders, support rapid and effective alignment of the African scientific leadership and major funding partners, and ultimately direct resources toward those projects deemed most critical to scientific and development progress in Africa. Enhancing gender equity in science is one of the priority areas that the AAS has selected for 2020. Despite women being over 50% of the total global population, they remain underrepresented in science careers in Africa. While gender equity is prioritized in the SDGs (Goal 5) and in AU Agenda 2063 (Goal 17), the STI pillar, STISA 2024 has largely failed to provide a framework for achieving gender equity in the efforts to harness STI for sustainable development in Africa.
