Celebrating the life and contribution of Professor Ogunlade Davidson

Nairobi, Kenya, November 2022

It is with a great deal of sadness that the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) has received news of the passing of Professor Ogunlade Davidson, an AAS Fellow and member of the Membership Advisory Committee 2020 (Engineering Technology and Applied Sciences). He passed away on 8 October 2022.

Professor Ogunlade was a renowned scientist. He obtained his Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering at the University of Sierra Leone in 1972; a Master of Science in thermo fluids from the University of Manchester in the UK in 1975; and a doctorate in heat transfer from the University of Salford in the UK in 1979.

He was a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sierra Leone and later became the Head of Department of Mechanical and Maintenance Engineering, and Dean at the Faculty of Engineering.

In addition to his academic posts at the University of Sierra Leone and several visiting academic positions, Professor Ogunlade served as a co-chair of the Global Network on Energy for Sustainable Development (GNESD), director of the Energy and Development Research Centre (EDRC) in South Africa, co-chair of WGIII of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Vice-Chair of the IPCC. He also served as Minister of Energy and Water Resources in Sierra Leone.

The AAS remembers him for his contribution to the growth of the Academy. May His Soul Rest in Eternal Peace.
