Seven early career scientists attend the 2022 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) recognises excellence and supports early career scientists by nominating them to attend the prestigious Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings, which take place every year in Lindau, Germany. This year, four early career African scientists were selected to attend the 71st Lindau Nobel Laureate (Chemistry), which took place from 26th June to 2nd July 2022 and three attended the 7th Lindau Nobel Meeting on Economic Sciences, which took place from 23rd to 27th August 2022.

The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings alternate between physiology and medicine; physics; and chemistry – the three natural science Nobel Prize disciplines. An interdisciplinary meeting takes place every five years. In addition, the Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences is held every three years. They provide a forum for the nominees to engage with their peers from different disciplines across the globe and Nobel Laureates about current developments and future challenges in their field. As an official partner of the Lindau Foundation since 2015, the AAS is invited to nominate young scientists every year and thereafter funds the successful nominees.

The opportunity to join the annual gathering of Nobel Laureates at Lindau is provided exclusively to outstanding young scientists aged up to 35 who represent the emerging generation of leading scientists and researchers. These young scientists become part of a special community – a network of excellence. As alumni of the Lindau Meetings, former participants stay connected with each other and become ambassadors of the scientific dialogue fostered by the Lindau Meetings.

The AAS Nominees will join outstanding undergraduates, doctoral and postdoctoral students under the age of 35 from 107 countries all selected for their emerging excellence in science.

1. Athi Welsh from the University of Cape Town in South Africa
2. Joseph Tchamgoue from the University of Yaoundé 1 in Cameroon
3. Kwadwo Asare Owusu from the Wuhan University of Technology, China
4. Morlu Stevens from the Akita University, Japan

The 7th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences

1. Chemseddine Tidjani from Algeria at the Research Center in Applied Economics for Development (CREAD), Algeria.
2. Oluwabunmi Opeyemi Adejumo from Nigeria at the Obafemi Awolowo University.
3. Gilles Quentin Kane from Cameroon at the University of Yaounde II in Cameroon.
