This country profile highlights the role of the AAS in advancing science and technology in South Africa, a country that has shown leadership in advancing science and technology in Africa since its transition to democracy in 1994. Its Gross Expenditure on Research & Development (GERD) stands at 0.80% of it’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and almost meets the African Union target of 1%.
