Born in Asmara - Eritrea, Tsehaie Woldai holds a PhD degree from the Open University, Milton Keynes, England (1994).
Woldai’s working career began with the Geological Survey and the Water Resources Authority of Ethiopia. Later on in The Netherlands, he worked in Leiden University and the Netherlands Institute for Higher Scientific Research (ZWO) before he permanently joined the University of Twente, Faculty of Geoinformation Sciences & Earth Observation (ITC) in 1982.
His current position at the University is Associate Professor of geological remote sensing. From 2008 to 2012, he has held several positions that include the Portfolio Manager for Education, Marketing and Project Services within the Department of Earth Systems Analysis at ITC.
Woldai’s longest career has been in academia, conducting research and teaching on a full range of geoscience topics, ranging from geological resources exploration, environmental geology, and neotectonic to satellite remote sensing, GIS, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), Interferometric SAR (In SAR) and modeling of geological processes. Throughout his 30 years career with the University, He has taught over one thousand students at Professional Master (PM)/MSc/PhD levels and supervised the research of more than 300 MSc and PhD students from all over the World.
Besides, Woldai has:
Worked as Principal or Co-investigator in over 20 scientific researches and investigations financed by the European Space Agency, European Union, The Dutch Government, CNES – France and DLR – Germany, NASA including private donors mostly on space science related activities and its application.
Presented Africa’s space science and geoinformation policies and challenges in many international forum and is the initiator (in October 2002, Abuja, Nigeria) of the African Space Leadership Conference currently hosted every two years in different countries of Africa.
Woldai is a Fellow of the Geological Society of Africa (http://www.geologicalsocietyofafrica.org/); Founder and immediate past president of the African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE); and association with more than 1800 members, including 32 national associations/societies, five space agencies in Africa and over 200 international organizations involved in satellite remote sensing and space activities. He Sits in the Board of many national, regional and international organizations and is a winner of many prestigious awards; among the latest ones include: “AARSE Achievement Award” (2012) -- a prestigious award for his work as founder, President and for turning the association into a political force shaping Africa’s Space programs. The second one given in October 2012 was the ESRI “Making a Difference in Africa” Award. The ESRI award is given once a year to distinguished personalities from various continents during its user conference in San Diego, USA. The conference attracts over 15,000 participants from all over the world.
On the appointment of the former Dutch Minister for Development Cooperation, he has served in the Board of the Netherlands University Foundation for International Cooperation for many years. He is also AARSE leading Official delegate to "Group on Earth Observation (GEO)"; Advisory Member for GEO task US-09-01a on Disasters Societal Benefit Area

Prof. Fred Otieno currently the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Partnerships at the Durban University of Technology, South Africa is a “C” rated Researcher with the National Research Foundation (NRF) South Africa.
He is a Professional registered Engineer (Pr Eng), a Fellow of the South Africa Institution of Civil Engineers (FSAICE), a Senior Fellow of the Water Institute of Southern Africa (WISA) in South Africa and was the WISA President in 2007/2008. He has over 30 years in consulting, lecturing and research activities in his areas of specialization (water, environmental, general civil engineering, project management and general management).
He has successfully supervised over 30 masters and 8 doctoral students and continues to do so. He has been an active researcher in a number of disciplines and more recently focusing on water resources management, water and waste water treatment, solid waste management and general environmental management. He has published over 60 accredited Journal papers and over 120 peer reviewed international conference papers.
He previously worked as a consulting engineer and has over the years consulted for a number of NGO’s, Government Departments, national and international organizations and the United Nations Specialized Agencies in his areas of expertise. He has previously held a number of Non-Executive Director positions, among these being the Vice Chairperson of the Water Research Commission, Non-Executive Director and acting Chairperson of Pikitup in Johannesburg; Chairperson of Softstart BTI Technology incubator and the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL).
He currently sits on the Boards of and Randwater and Invotech Incubator, where he is the Chairperson of the Board. He is also involved in the UNESCO’s African National Scientific and Technological Institutions (ANSTI) Board as the Vice Chairperson of its Board as well as being a Council Member of the South African Institution of Civil Engineers.

Dr Judith A. Omumbo holds a PhD from Oxford University, an MPH (Hebrew University, Israel) and a Bachelor’s degree in Dentistry (University of Nairobi).
She began her career in epidemiology working as part of the KEMRI/Welcome Trust Collaborative Programme in Kenya. She was awarded a Welcome Prize studentship to undertake DPhil at the University of Oxford in modeling the spatial risks of Plasmodium falciparum in East Africa and completed her DPhil in 2005 after which she moved to the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) as an Associate Research Scientist with IRI’s Africa Program until 2011.
Her research interests continue to involve building the capacity of the health sector in Africa to use climate information effectively for decision- making in the control of climate-sensitive diseases. She serves on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the World Wide Anti-malaria Resistance Network (WWARN) and the External Technical Advisory Group for AvecNet, a project on “Targeting malaria by hitting the vector” that is led by the Liverpool School of Tropical medicine and sponsored by the European Union.
She has contributed significantly to the development of the use of maps and Geographic Information Systems to undertake the spatial and temporal distribution of malaria in Kenya and the Greater Horn of Africa over the past 15 years of her career. She serves as a technical advisor on malaria international program of the World Health Organization
She has added her knowledge of climate information to capacity building initiatives she has led for the climate-sensitive disease control program in Eastern Africa. Dr Omumbo’s vision is for Africa to lead its own agenda or decision making for development needs and this will increasingly become the case as scientists from Africa extend their collaboration and receive recognition by peers in Africa for their achievements.

Dr Seck has received the title of Chevalier in the Order of Agricultural Merit of France, Certificate of Recognition from FARA, Medal of Honor from CORAF/WECARD, United Nations (UN) Award in his capacity as Africa Rice Director General and Award of Recognition from the Agriculture Ministry of Mali. He has received the title of the Chevalier in the National Order of Lion and Officer in the Order of Merit of Senegal. He is co-laureate of the 2012 T W Schultz Prize for Best Contributed Paper at the 28th International Conference of Agricultural Economists.
Dr Seck was among four international experts invitedin 2009 by UN Secretary General to make a presentation on the Millennium Development Goals before Heads of States. He has authored or co-authored 80 publications, including articles, papers in international conferences with scientific committees, books and forewords for more than 10 books.

Darwa is a Professor and Director, Synthesis and Catalysis Research Centre, University of Johannesburg, South Africa. Prof Darkwa has made an immense contribution to coordination chemistry of metals and their applications as catalysts in olefin transformation reactions; and as potential metallo-drugs for cancer and HIV.
His group was the first to use pyrazolyl nickel complexes and ethylaluminium dichloride as tandem catalysts in the facile production of alkyltoluenes, starting materials for sulfonated detergents, from the oligomerization of ethylene and their Friedel-Crafts alkylation of toluene.
He has also developed a novel class of gold anticancer and anti-HIV agents. His current research interests include using plants as renewable sources for materials that are currently produced from petrochemicals. As President of the South African Chemical Institute (2011-2013) and a member of the Institute’s Council, he has been instrumental in building links between chemists in South Africa and the rest of the continent; such linkages have allowed students to undertake postgraduate training in South Africa.

Professor Anthony Nyong is the Director of Climate Change and Green Growth at the African Development Bank. He has about 30 years of experience in environmental and natural resources management, environmental and social safeguards, renewable energy and green growth that span academia, private sector and development finance. Positions he has held at the African Development Bank include Coordinator of the New Deal on Energy for Africa; Head of the Renewable Energy Flagship, Head of Gender, Climate Change and Sustainable Development; and Head of the Compliance and Safeguards. Before joining the Bank, he was a Senior Climate Change Specialist at the International Development Research Centre of Canada and prior to that, a Professor of Climate Change at the University of Jos, Nigeria.
Prof. Nyong has served on several Global Advisory and Scientific Boards including the Sustainable Stock Exchange Green Finance Advisory Group, the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Agricultural Resilience in Nigeria; WHO Thematic Reference Group on Environment, Agriculture and Infectious Disease; Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel of the Global Environment Facility; the International Human Dimensions Program, Global Environmental Change and Food Systems, and Pan-African committee for the Global Change System for Analysis, Research and Training. He has served on the Boards of the Applied Center for Climate and Earth Systems Science, South Africa and the International Centre for Climate Change and Development at the Independent University, Bangladesh. Nyong is a member of the Planning Committee of the Climate and Health Initiative of the National Academy of Medicine (USA). Prof. Mugyenyi, currently the President of UNAS, is a Paediatrician, researcher and specialist on HIV/AIDS and related conditions. He was the Executive Director of the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC), Kampala (1992-2017) recognized as centre of excellence in medical research, training and healthcare where he established a CAP certified research laboratory that supported many landmark, national, multicenter and international collaborative research including a pioneer HIV vaccine trial in Africa. He was among the first to introduce the use of anti-retroviral (ARV) therapy in Africa, as well as development of an effective model to effectively scale it up in resource limited countries.
In his long career he has served in various capacities and held important responsibilities in national and international medical, academic and research institutions, a well as government and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Among them in Uganda include, serving as President: Uganda Pediatric Association, Chairman of Uganda Blood Transfusion Services, Medical Sciences Committee of Uganda National Council of Science and Technology, Uganda Ministry of Health AIDS Task Force and Uganda National Academy of Science Research Committee. At Mbarara University of Science and technology (MUST), he was appointed Visiting Professor of Medicine, Chairman of University Board and later the Chancellor of the MUST.

Professor Mugyenyi is among those who championed HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and advocacy. As a researcher Prof. Mugyenyi has been a Principal Investigator many landmark research projects some of them funded by National Institutes of Health (NIH), European Union, WHO and Medical Research Council (MRC). His research and publications cover a wide spectrum of HIV/AIDS, related diseases and other medical conditions. Specific areas of his research include: paediatric and adult HIV treatment, drug trials, HIV resistance, HIV prevention, immunological studies including HIV vaccine trials, pharmacokinetic, molecular and epidemiological studies as well as social and economic impact of HIV. Alexis Nzila currently leads a research group at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. One of his key research areas focuses on the understanding the mechanism of antimalarial resistance. From 2008-2010, he was supported by the CGGH to study phenotypic variation in the drug sensitivity of Plasmodium falciparum isolates collected Kilifi District, and to investigate genotype-phenotype associations using genome sequencing data generated on these isolates at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. This work was carried out in collaboration with the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme and relates to Alexis’s longstanding interest in the mechanism of action of antimalarial drugs such as lumefantrine, piperaquine and amodiaquine.

He served as Provost in 2021 and he is now the President and a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Lawrence Technological University, Michigan. He is Distinguished Professor and Dean of Engineering Emeritus at the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut.
He served as the University of Bridgeport (UB) Executive Vice President, Research and Economic Development, and the Founding Dean of the College of Engineering, Business, and Education (2018-2020), Interim Provost (2020), and Distinguished Professor of Engineering and Computer Science (2010-2020). He was the Founding Director of the Interdisciplinary Robotics, Intelligent Sensing, and Control (RISC) laboratory (1995-2020), the Founder of the High-Tech Business Incubator at UB (CTech IncUBator) (2010-2011), and the Founding Director of the UB Innovation Center (2019-2020). He was the Senior Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research (2014-2018), Vice President (2008-2014), Vice Provost (2006-2008), Dean of the School of Engineering (1999-2018), Interim Dean of the School of Business, Director of External Engineering Programs, Interim Chair of Computer Science and Computer Engineering, and Chair of the Department of Technology Management. He was a Professor of Computer, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science (2000-2010), an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Computer Engineering at the University of Bridgeport (1995-1999), a Research Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the Department of Computer Science, University of Utah (1992-1995), and a Research Fellow at the General Robotics and Active Sensory Perception (GRASP) Laboratory of the University of Pennsylvania from (1989-1991).
His background is in the fields of computer science and engineering, STEM Education, control theory, robotics, automation, manufacturing, AI, computer vision and signal processing. He has published over 275 refereed journal and conference papers, and book chapters in these and other areas, in addition to 27 books. Dr. Sobh served or currently serves on the editorial boards of 18 journals, and has served as Chair, Technical Program Chair and on the program committees of over 300 international conferences and workshops in the Robotics, Computer Vision, Automation, Sensing, Computing, Systems, Control, Online Engineering and Engineering Education areas. He has presented more than 150 keynote speeches, invited talks and lectures, colloquia and seminars at research meetings, University departments, research centers, and companies.
Professor Sobh has supervised over 50 award-winning graduate and undergraduate students working on different projects within robotics, prototyping, computer vision, control, and manufacturing; in addition to more than 300 undergraduate and graduate students working on their B.S. projects, Master's thesis or Ph.D. dissertations. Dr. Sobh is active in consulting and providing service to many industrial organizations and companies. He has consulted for several companies in the U.S., Switzerland, India, Malaysia, England, the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan and Egypt, to support projects in higher education, robotics, automation, manufacturing, sensing, and control. He has also worked at Philips Laboratories in New York, and a number of companies in Egypt. Dr. Sobh has been awarded over 60 research awards and grants to pursue his work in robotics, automation, STEM education, manufacturing, and sensing. Dr. Sobh is a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences and a member of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering. Dr. Sobh is a recipient of the ASEE Northeastern U.S. Distinguished Engineering Professor of the Year award, the IEEE Northeast Technological Innovation Research Award, an ACE Higher Education Award and several other merits in recognition of his educational, research, scholarly and service activities in engineering, education, computing and diversity initiatives. Dr. Sobh is a Licensed Professional Electrical Engineer (P.E.), a Certified Manufacturing Engineer (CMfgE) by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, a Certified Professional Manager (C.M.) by the Institute of Certified Professional Managers at James Madison University, a Certified Reliability Engineer (C.R.E.) by the American Society for Quality, a member of Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honor Society), Sigma Xi (Scientific Research Society), Phi Beta Delta (International Honor Society), Upsilon Pi Epsilon (National Honor Society for the Computing Sciences), Phi Kappa Phi (Academic Honor Society) and an honorary member of Delta Mu Delta (National Honor Society for Business Administration). Dr. Sobh is a member, senior member, founding or board member of several professional organizations including; ACM, IEEE, the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), the International Association of Online Engineering (IAOE), the Bridgeport Discovery Museum, the Connecticut Pre-Engineering Program (CPEP), and the International E-Learning Association (IELA). Dr. Sobh is a graduate of Victoria College, Alexandria, Egypt, in 1983 and a life member of the Old Victorians Association.

Prof Touré obtained his PhD in 1994 from the Univerity of Franche-Comté of Besançon (France); then joined the Mathematics Department of the University of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) and rose through the ranks to become full Professor in 2002.
His research interests include mathematics in nonlinear elliptic parabolic equation using the theory of evolution equations in Banach spaces; stabilization problem of parabolic-hyperbolic non linear type in mathematical and numerical aspects of pollutants, transport in a porous environment, analysis, functional analysis and partial differential equations.
He has been Head of the Department of mathematics of the Institute of Mathematics and physics, Head of the Postgraduate programs, Deputy Director of the Centre of Computer Sciences in Charge of Distance Learning and ICT, Director of the University Pedagogic Centre, Director of the Virtual University Centre of Africa, Director of the Distance learning Degree of Multimedia Communicator, Director of the laboratory of LAME Equations and Mathematical Analysis and Director of AMMSI West African Regional Office.
He has served as Senior Associate at the ICTP in Trieste (Italy) and Coordinator of the Research Network PDE Modelling and Control he Co-Founded. He is a member of the Executive Committee of African Mathematical Union (UMA) and several other professional societies. He has 27 publications (2009).

Prof. Danso was educated in Ghana where he obtained B.Sc. in agriculture from the University of Ghana in 1970, M.Sc. in 1972 and PhD in 1974.
Formerly he was a research fellow in Colombia, Post-doctoral research fellow in Nigeria, Lecturer in Ghana, Second Officer FAO/IAEA then First Officer IAEA Austria, professor, Head of Department, Vice Dean and Director ECOLAB at University of Ghana.
His research interests include: Plant nutrition, ecology and biodiversity, biotechnology, soil organic matter, land degradation, biological nitrogen fixation and use of biofertilizers in sustainable agriculture. He is a member of the International Society of Soil Science, Soil Science Society of America, American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, American Society of microbiology and Soil Science Society of Ghana. He is Chair of Geo-Environmental Science, Gold award and Fellow of Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences and Ford Foundation Scholar. He has 120 Peer-reviewed publications.
