He completed his BSc with Honours in Chemistry and Biochemistry (1979), MSc (1982) and PhD (1988) in Organic Chemistry at the University of Ghana, with his PhD research in insect chemical ecology conducted at icipe between 1985 and 1988. He was a Postdoctoral Associate (1989-1991) at the University of Maine, Orono. In 1991, he accepted a Scientist position at icipe and was later promoted to Senior Scientist in 2000. He was Rothamsted International Fellow (2000) at Rothamsted Research, United Kingdom and Visiting Scientist at the USDA/ARS-Centre for Medical, Agriculture and Veterinary Entomology, Gainesville, Florida (2001-2006). Baldwyn returned to icipe in 2007 as Principal Scientist and Research Leader of the Behavioural and Chemical Ecology Unit (BCEU). He is affiliated to the University of Pretoria as an Extraordinary Professor.
Baldwyn has published 105 peer-reviewed scientific papers including 96 journal articles, 3 Patents and 6 book chapters on insect chemical ecology with over 1,500 citations. He has given several plenary and keynote presentations at conferences including the XXV 2016 International Congress of Entomology, Orlando, Florida, International Society of Chemical Ecology, Invasive Plants and Malaria workshop, 13th Arbovirus and Mosquito Workshop and NE1443 Regional Project Workshop, USA, the General assembly of the African Academy of Sciences. He is a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the Entomological Society of America, served as Councillor for the International Society of Chemical Ecology, member of the American Chemical Society. He serves as a Reviewer for various Research Grant Organisations across the globe, and editorial boards of scientific journals: Journal of Chemical Ecology, Pest Management Science and the International Journal of Tropical Insect Science and the Advisory Board of Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

His research addresses drug trials in children and pregnancy seeking safe and effective medicaments, also epidemiology and control of infectious diseases. Founded and chaired the East Africa Network for Monitoring Antimalarial Treatment (1996- 2006) that generated the evidence base for effective treatment policies in the sub-region. Prof. Mutabingwa is a certified WHO clinical monitor since 1996. Until recently, was member of three WHO Technical Expert Groups, Executive Boards for Malaria Clinical Trials Alliance, Malaria in Pregnancy Consortium and the World Antimalarial Resistance Network. He established the Master of Science in Public Health degree at HKMU.

Dr. Segenet Kelemu, is the Director General & CEO of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) Nairobi, Kenya. She is the fourth Chief Executive Officer, and the first woman to lead icipe. After more than 25 years in the United States of America and Latin America applying cutting-edge science that saw her garner numerous professional and state honours for an exceptional career as a scientist, Dr Kelemu, returned from the diaspora in 2007 to contribute to Africa’s development. Dr. Kelemu is a 2014 L’Oréal-UNESCO Laureate for Women in Science Awards, and one of the top 100 most influential African women featured in the May 2014 Edition of Forbes Africa. Dr. Kelemu was listed among the 10 most influential African women in agriculture by the Journal of Gender, Agriculture and Food Security.
In January 2018, she was recognised by Bill Gates, as one of five ‘Heroes in the Field’ who are using their talents to fight poverty, hunger and disease, and providing opportunities for the next generation. In April 2018, the Women Economic Forum awarded Dr. Kelemu their highest award “Woman of the Decade in Natural and Sustainable Ecosystems” for outstanding leadership. In 2018, she has been featured in The CEO Magazine, Australia, as one of the six exceptional leaders from around the world, breaking ground and shattering the glass ceiling.
She has also received other awards and recognitions including the TWAS Prize for Agricultural Sciences (2011) and an Honorary Doctorate from Tel Aviv University for her professional contributions to society (2015). She is also a recipient of the College of Agriculture Alumni Fellow of Kansas State University, USA (2019; the Science Honoree of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St Louis, Missouri, USA (2019); International Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry (2020); the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, New York (2020). In 2020, she was recognized and featured by UN Women as one of seven women “Devoted to discovery: seven women scientists who have shaped our world”; and by The International Climate Change Development Initiative as one of “five African women scientists to celebrate.”
She serves in various Boards, advisory panels in major global initiatives and has served in international juries of key science awards. She is a Fellow of various Academies of Sciences. Prof Torto is the Executive Director of The African Academy of Sciences.
Prior to joining The AAS, Prof Torto was the founding Chief Executive Officer of the Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI), a national research institution. At BITRI he promoted co-creation and ensured that empathy was the value that drove the organisation’s initiatives. His other appointments include Full Professor in Analytical Chemistry and Head of the Chemistry Department at Rhodes University; and Associate Professor at the University of Botswana where he undertook several responsibilities covering Coordinator of Analytical Chemistry, Founding Director of the Centre for Scientific Research Indigenous Knowledge and Innovation (CesriKi), which is credited with the establishment of the indigenous knowledge policy for Botswana.
He has had an illustrious research career, which has seen him publish over 130 papers, graduate 19 PhDs and several MSc students, being cited more than 2000 times since 2012, have an H-index of 25 and successfully apply for patents for his research in material chemistry where his group employed electrospun fibres for various applications.
Prof Torto is a recipient of several international awards, including the American Chemical Society’s Young Investigators in Separation Science Award, the Award for Collaboration in Analytical Chemistry from the Nigerian Chemical Society, Osuni Chapter and is an internationally recognised speaker. He has also served in various capacities in pan African and international networks and organisations including being the Founding Secretary General for the African Network of Analytical Chemists (SEANAC); the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry’s Division V; and South African institutions, such as iThemba Labs, the Materials Division Advisory for the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, the Nanotechnology Forum for the Department of Science and Technology, the Analytical Division of the South African Chemical Institute (SACI). He was Analytical Editor of the South African Journal of Chemistry and a SASOL Professor of Analytical Chemistry.
Prof Torto is currently a panel member of the Research Council UK, an editorial board member for the international journal Chromatographia and has given master class sessions in evidence-driven policy for the European Union. He is a qualified and accredited Time to Think Coach as well as Time to Think Facilitator and is currently enrolled for the Certified Ontological Coaching Programme.
He is a Fellow of the following science academies: the Botswana Academy of Sciences, the African Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of Chemistry. He has a PhD in analytical chemistry from Lund University in Sweden, an MSc from the University of Botswana and a BSc (Hons) Chemistry from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in the United Kingdom.

Ermias Dagne is Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia and is now Director of ALNAP (African Laboratory for Natural Products) which is a network of five African laboratories in neighboring countries. He is fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Science (EAS), the African Academy of Science (AAS) and the Third World Academy of Science (TWAS). He was also fellow several years ago of the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (AvH-Germany) and Fulbright Fellowship (USA). He is recipient of two international awards: IFS/DANIDA (1997) and IOCD Pierre Crabbe (2003). He has published extensively and has developed the Natural Database for Africa (NDA), which can be accessed on CDROM or in the internet (www.alnapnetwork.com). His research was supported by grants including local Addis Ababa University and International Foundation for Science (IFS), ISP-IPICS and Sida-SAREC (Sweden). Prof Steyn PhD (UNISA, 1967) and PhD, h.c. (UNISA 2010) an organic chemist, has distinguished himself in the area of fungal toxins (mycotoxins) and plant toxins (particularly the bufadienolides).
He carried out research at the CSIR in Pretoria, at the North West University, and lately at the University of Stellenbosch. The research of Steyn culminated in the publication of more than 190 papers in the international scientific journals. The international status of Steyn in chemistry led to his election as President of the International Association of Cereal Science and Technology (ICC, Vienna) for 1992-1994 as well as to his election President of IUPAC for 2002 – 2003. It is remarkable that he was the first person from Africa to serve the international fraternity as President of IUPAC and of ICC.
Steyn is the recipient of the top medals of The SA Chemical Institute, The National Science and Technology Forum, The SA Association for the Advancement of Science, The SA Academy of Science, Die SA Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns (Afrikaans Academy), as well as the coveted Friedrich Schweitzer Medal of ICC (1993). The Republic of South Africa honoured Steyn in 2012 by the Award of the National Order of Mapungubwe (Class Silver) for his excellent contributions to and achievements in the chemistry and biosynthesis of mycotoxins.

Kevin Chika URAMA, FAAS is currently the Senior Director of the African Development Institute at the African Development Bank Group, responsible for shaping and leading the bank-wide capacity development in the Regional Member Countries (RMCs) to accelerate delivery of the High 5 priorities of the Bank, the SDGs and Agenda 2063. He is also an elected Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS); a Distinguished Professor of the University of Nigeria; an Extra-Ordinary Professor in the School of Public Leadership, Stellenbosch University, South Africa; an Adjunct Professor at the Sir Walter Murdoch School of Public Policy and International Affairs, Murdoch University, Western Australia; an Expert Partner of the Africa Progress Group Chaired by Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and was Visiting Professor at the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy, University College London. Kevin holds a Ph.D. in Land Economy from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom; an MPhil in Land Economy with a Distinction form Cambridge University; a Master of Science in Agricultural Economies form University of Nigeria, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Economics with a First Class Honors from the University of Nigeria. Prof. Toteu is a Precambrian geologist with close to 40 years’ experience. He started his career in 1982 as Research Officer at the Institute of Geological and Mining Research (IRGM) in Cameroon which, he left in 2007. During this period, he made significant contribution to the understanding the Precambrian geology of Central Africa, collaborating with various institutions across the world (France, USA, Denmark, Germany, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and South Africa). He succeeded in building an impressive database on the isotopic geochronology of Central Africa. He also contributed significantly to various maps in Cameroon and in Africa (Tectonic Map of Africa, Seismotectonic Map of Africa). As from 2007, moved to southern Africa to teach and conduct research in various universities in Botswana and in South Africa where he made a significant scientific contribution to the “Africa Alive Corridors” initiative. He joined UNESCO in 2010 to coordinate the UNESCO’s Earth science program in Africa. In this context, he successfully designed and implemented continental-scale projects, including the setting up of the “African Network of Earth Science Institutions”, an important platform to promote South-South cooperation and boost skill development in African Earth science institutions. He served the scientific community in various capacity including as President of the Geological Society of Africa (2004-2008), Member of the Nominating Committee of the International Union of Geological Sciences (2008-2011), Member of the Board of the International Year of Planet Earth representing Africa (2007-2010) Member of the UNESCO/IUGS/IGCP Scientific Board (2008-2010), Treasurer of the African Academy of Sciences (2015), and Chair of the Advisory Committee of the EU-funded PanAfGeo project (2016-2019) to capacitate the African Geological Surveys. He is currently serving as President for Africa of the Commission of the Geological Map of the World, and as Council Member of the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST). Prof. Toteu is an accomplished science diplomat on behalf of African Earth Science. He also contributed to various Earth science journals either as the Editor, member of Editorial Board, or Guest Editor for various Special Issues.

Professor Ambaliou SANNI has started his carrier at the University of Abomey-Calavi (Benin) with a Doctorate (Doctorat de 3ème cycle) degree in Biochemistry, structure and function of proteins. Later on he has completed a Doctorat d’Etat es Sciences, Molecular Biology.
He has built his career on this particular domain, and the outputs of his research activities are of global impact. He has contributed to a better understanding of the primary structure, as well as the functioning, of cytoplasmic and mitochondrial forms of phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase, two complex key enzymes involved in proteins synthesis.
He has created the first well-established laboratory of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at University of Abomey-Calavi. So that his team has been involved in many area of research in which biochemistry and molecular biology are needed. This has allowed building research collaborations within Africa, Europe and Canada. Consequently, several research topics were developed by his team around this platform including Biomedical, plant genetic resources and environmental researches.
Professor SANNI held a position of head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Faculty of Sciences and Technics and was a Director of Post Graduate school of Life Sciences at the University of Abomey-Calavi.
He held for five (5) years a position of General Director of higher education of Repubic of Benin.
He is a Member of the regional committee of experts of the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie

After her baccalaureate degree in 1987, Mophou went to France to continue her studies. She obtained her Advanced study Diploma (D.E.A) in numerical Analysis at the University Paris VI in 1997 and began her PhD studies at the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (University of the French West Indies and Guiana). She earned my PhD in Numerical Analysis in 2000 from the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane. Her doctoral work deals with the study of numerical schemes of non conservative systems using the method splitting methods. She obtained her Habilition to Lead Research (H.D.R) in 2010. Since 2013 She has been a Full Professor in Applied Mathematics at Université des Antilles et de la Guyane. From April 2017 to October 2019, she had a position of German research chair sponsored by Alexander von Humboldt at AIMS Cameroon. She is also member of Laboratoire de Mathématiques informatique et Applications (LAMIA) at the Université des Antilles (UA).
Her areas of research in Applied Mathematics include Partial Differential Equations, Time Fractional Partial Differential Equations and Control Theory. Her main goal by studying these subjects is to use them for modeling environmental phenomenon in order to control them.
So far, she has trained and mentored some young researchers and five have earned their PhD diploma under her advice. Most of them are now working as lecturer at the Université des Antilles, Université de la Guyane, Université d’Etat d’Haïti (State University of Haiti). Apart from being a fellow at the African Academy of Sciences, she is also a member of the editorial board of at least seven journals.

Francisca Nneka Okeke is a Professor of Physics, 2000 to date and her areas of research interest include; solid earth geophysics, atmospheric Physics and climate variability. She holds the following qualifications; B.Sc Physics, (21), M.Ed, M.Sc Ph.D and PGDE. Her postdoctoral research was carried out in University of Tokyo, Japan. In her determined academic pursuit, she visited and collaborated with; University of Nathal, Durban, South Africa, University of Tokyo, Japan, CPTEC Brazil, Harvard Smithsonian Centre, Cambridge, USA, Morgan State University, Baltimore etc. She has published extensively (117) in top international journals, articles and books. She is the winner of the prestigious award of L’Oreal-UNESCO Award for women in Science for physical Sciences, 2013, representing Africa and Arab States. This Award has placed Nigeria and Africa on the World map of honours in science. She is one of the five laureates on the globe- an award for which the former governor of Anambra (Governor, Peter Obi) honoured her in the government house. Former President Good Luck Jonathan appointed her a member of Governing Council of Space Science. A governing Council member of ANSTI for years. She has contributed immensely to the academic growth of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and Nigeria at large. She has supervised 36 M.Sc and 23 Ph.D students and still supervising many PhD’s and MSc’s. She has written articles that encouraged girls/Women in reading Physics in Nigeria/Africa at Large. She attracted CNN to her University/her home town that covered her in African voices for a period of one week. She is a member of several learned societies. She was the first female HOD of Physics and Astronomy, 2003- 2006, the first female Dean, Faculty of Physical Sciences, 2008- 2010. The first female Professor in the Faculty of Science and Engineering of the UNN and in the Eastern part of Nigeria. She is; Fellow; The World Academy of Science, (FTWAS), African Academy of Science, (FAAS), Nigerian Academy of Science, (FAS), Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (FJSPS), and Nigeria Institute of Physics (FNIP). She has proved that Physics is not only male domain but female domain. Her accomplishments notwithstanding, she is an avid listener, very humble, highly dedicated, committed, humane and a respectful lady. Her unassuming personality makes her a natural bridge-builder and a team player.

Gebisa Ejeta is an Ethiopian American plant breeder, geneticist and holds the position of Distinguished Professor of Plant Breeding & Genetics and International Agriculture at Purdue University in the United States. In 2009, he won the World Food Prize for his major contributions in the production of sorghum.
He attended an agricultural and technical secondary school and Alemaya College of Agriculture, what is now Haramaya University in Ethiopia. Both schools were founded by Oklahoma State University under the kind auspices of the U.S. Government’s Point Four Program, the predecessor of the U.S. Agency for International Development. He received his MSc and PhD degrees from Purdue University.
Working in Sudan during the early 1980s, Ejeta developed Africa's first commercial hybrid variety of sorghum tolerant to drought. Later, with a Purdue University colleague in Indiana, he discovered the chemical basis of the relationship between the deadly parasitic weed striga and sorghum and was able to produce sorghum varieties resistant to both drought and striga.
Professor Ejeta has served on numerous science and program review panels, technical committees, and advisory boards of major research and development organizations including the international agricultural research centers (IARCs), the Rockefeller Foundation, the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, and a number of national and regional organizations in Africa. He was a member of the team that launched the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa, a joint effort of the Rockefeller and Gates Foundations. Dr. Ejeta has served the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), the largest publicly funded agricultural research consortium in the world as member of its Science Council, and later as member of its Consortium Board. He was also a board member of the Sasakawa Africa Program.
Professor Ejeta has had the honor of serving at the highest level of science and policy advisory for several international development and U.S. government agencies, including as Special Advisor to the USAID Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah, as Science Envoy of the U.S. State Department, and as a member of the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon’s Scientific Advisory Board. He currently serves on the boards of the Global Crop Diversity Trust, the Chicago Council for Global Affairs’ Global Food and Agriculture Program, the National Academy of Sciences Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources, the International Water Management Institute, the U.S. Government Board for International Food and Agricultural Development, and as an ex-officio member of the Council of Advisors of the World Food Prize.
A 2009 World Food Prize Laureate and recipient of a national medal of honour from the President of Ethiopia, Professor Ejeta is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy, and a Fellow of the Crop Science Society of America, apart from being a Fellow at the African Academy of Sciences.

Burton Mwamila is a Tanzanian academic and engineering professional with a 1984 PhD degree in structural engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. He was the founding Chairman of Tanzania’s National Council for Technical Education from 1999-2007, and the founding Principal of the College of Engineering and Technology of the University of Dar es Salaam from 2005-2009. He also served as the Chairman of Tanzania’s Engineers Registration Board from 2000- 06, and the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology from 2006-2013. Furthermore, he served as Member of the Governing Council of the African Network of Scientific and Technological Institutions from 2000-09, and Chairman of the Executive Board of the Pan-African Competitiveness Forum from 2008-2014. He is currently the Chairman of the Tanzania Automotive Technology Centre since 2011, and the Vice Chancellor of the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology in Arusha (NM-AIST) since its establishment in July 2009.

Prof Nyasse is a full University Professor of Organic Chemistry with special interests in Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products Chemistry into which, he has published many articles in peer-reviewed journals. Prof Nyasse is the Head of the Promotion of Academic Research at the Ministry of Higher Education of Cameroon and Head of the Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry, Faculty of Science, the University of Yaounde where is working on selective inhibitors of the glycolytic pathways in the Trypanosomatideae which provoke Sleeping sickness and Chagas Disease. In this context, Prof Nyasse has developed new selective inhibitors with known mechanisms of actions either by synthesis or from extraction from medicinal plants of Cameroon. Prof Nyasse in addition to his daily duties as a lecturer and research management is also a member of many scientific bodies: He serves as a Scientific Adviser to International Foundation for Science (IFS), Scientific Adviser to WHO/TDR & ANDI (African Network for Drug & Diagnostics Innovation), Focal point of GIBEX (Global Institute for BioExploration), Lead Trainer of Trainers of AWARD (African Women in Agricultural Research and Development), Consultant to WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) and OAPI (Organisation Africaine de la Propriete Intellectuelle). He is also member of the Adviser committee of PRD College (Poverty related Diseases) and Global Health Systems; Member of American Chemical Society; Member of European peptide Society, Prof Nyasse is author of many publications dealing with pure synthetic chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry and Intellectual Property as evidenced by the attached list of his articles. The results from these publications have contributed in the formulation of local drugs such as Hepasor, Camzin and in the protection of some plants species that otherwise would have been destroyed.

Darwa is a Professor and Director, Synthesis and Catalysis Research Centre, University of Johannesburg, South Africa. Prof Darkwa has made an immense contribution to coordination chemistry of metals and their applications as catalysts in olefin transformation reactions; and as potential metallo-drugs for cancer and HIV.
His group was the first to use pyrazolyl nickel complexes and ethylaluminium dichloride as tandem catalysts in the facile production of alkyltoluenes, starting materials for sulfonated detergents, from the oligomerization of ethylene and their Friedel-Crafts alkylation of toluene.
He has also developed a novel class of gold anticancer and anti-HIV agents. His current research interests include using plants as renewable sources for materials that are currently produced from petrochemicals. As President of the South African Chemical Institute (2011-2013) and a member of the Institute’s Council, he has been instrumental in building links between chemists in South Africa and the rest of the continent; such linkages have allowed students to undertake postgraduate training in South Africa.

Collen has won many awards in recognition of his work including a certificate of distinction in Biochemistry from the Government of Zimbabwe. Professor Hoppers holds a South African Research Chair in Development Education hosted at the University of South Africa, Pretoria as part of South African Department of Science and Technology’s strategic knowledge and human resource intervention into the higher education landscape in South Africa.
Prior to that, she was a technical adviser on Indigenous Knowledge Systems to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Arts, Culture, Science and Technology (South Africa) and led the Task Team to draft the national policy on Indigenous Knowledge Systems. She was a Distinguished Professional at the Human Sciences Research Council; an Associate Professor at the University of Pretoria; a visiting Professor at Stockholm University (Sweden); Scientific Coordinator and Campus Director for the Council for the Development of Social Science in Africa (CODESRIA) Annual Social Science Campus (2006); and a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy from Orebro University (Sweden), and an Honorary Doctorate in Education from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in South Africa.
She was formerly a member of the International Faculty of the United Nations International Leadership Academy (Amman-Jordan); and is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa and a Member of the Academy of Science Special Panel on the Future of Humanities. She is a distinguished scholar at the Texas State University – San Marcos (US) and Advisory Faculty Member - Centre for Global Citizenship Education & Research, University of Alberta, Canada.
She serves as Co-Director and member of the Board of the PASCAL International Observatory - initiated by the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development Countries (OECD). She is a member of the Global Campaign for a Culture of Peace of the Hague Appeal for Peace (New York); was a Co-Convenor of the Global Political Economy Commission, and a member of the Council of the International Peace Research Association (IPRA), and of TRANSCEND.
She was part of the team convened by the UN Department of Disarmament Affairs that prepared the UN Study on Disarmament Education submitted and approved by the General Assembly (2002). She was recently listed in the “Marquis Who is Who in the World” 2013 in the Pearl Edition of the Marquis Who is Who (US).
Professor Hoppers is a scholar and policy specialist on International Development, education, North-South questions, disarmament, peace, and human security. She is a UNESCO expert in basic education, lifelong learning, and on Science and society; an expert to the World Economic Forum on benefit sharing and value addition protocols; and the World Intellectual Property Organisation on traditional knowledge and community intellectual property rights.
